A Guide to Nail Shapes

Looking to get your nails done, but not sure what shape to go for? Or maybe you’ve been wanting to grow your nails out, but aren’t sure how to maintain and style them. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In this guide, you will find some of the most popular nail shapes in the industry.

Each nail shape has its own unique set of characteristics and defining elements that make them special. It's important to familiarize yourself with the different shapes in order to choose one that helps you feel beautiful and confident. Of course you can always do the classic trial and error to discover which shapes you like/don’t like. Nails are supposed to be fun, so don’t be afraid to try something new. If you don’t end up liking a particular shape, no worries! It’s only temporary.

Your nails can say a lot about you, so make sure you pick a shape that best suits your personality and lifestyle!

1. Natural

Natural nails are becoming increasingly more popular. This is the shape that your nail naturally takes without having to do anything extra. This can be achieved by letting your nails grow out slightly and then filing or cutting the nail going with its natural shape and curvature.

2. Oval

Oval nails have a shape that can be compared to that of an egg. It has a narrower shape than round nails as you get to the tip (more like an elongated round shape). These nails can be shaped to any length, but are typically best for slightly longer nails. Because the nail tapers slightly as it gets to the tip, this style creates a subtle elongated effect.

3. Round

Different from the oval shape, round nails have a rounded tip that is shaped like a half circle. This is typically a good option for people who prefer shorter nails, but can be worn at any length. This shape is also great for those looking for a more uniform and symmetrical look to their natural nails, while still wanting to feel like they’ve been pampered.

4. Almond

As the name suggests, these nails are similar to the shape of an actual almond. To achieve this shape, the nails are filed along the sides to a tapered rounded point. This is currently one of the most popular shapes and is extremely popular with the “clean girl” aesthetic. It often looks better with slightly longer nails as it tends to elongate the fingers creating an elegant look. The shape is also more apparent when kept on the longer side.

In my opinion, the longer almond shape works better with shorter fingers because they elongate the fingers so much. However, I have seen shorter and even medium length almond nails work great with longer fingers too.

5. Square

Square nails have a flat top with sharp corners and edges. The sides are not tapered which creates the straight edges. This is oftentimes considered one of the most durable nail shapes, and is good for people who use their hands a lot in their daily lifestyle. Obviously, you can and should slightly soften the corners to avoid scratches and snags on clothing. However, it is important that you do this gently to ensure you still maintain the integrity and shape of the square.

This shape is excellent at any length. It’s great to add a little uniformity to short nails while still adding a hint of glam. But, it also looks extremely elegant when kept on the medium to longer side. In my opinion, this is one of the most flattering shapes for people with longer fingers. They can still add some length, but because the tip is flat, it eliminates the illusion that your fingers go on forever.

6. Squoval

Squoval nails unite the flat top of square nails with rounded corners. It’s great for enhancing a natural shape and is ideal for people who prefer short nails. It adds the perfect touch of elegance while still maintaining a natural appearance. This shape is especially great for those wanting their nails to reflect a more professional lifestyle. It’s an ideal choice for those who work with their hands or do a lot of typing as they usually don’t pose a hindrance or obstacle to everyday life. They’re also extremely easy to maintain.

7. Stiletto

Stiletto nails are long and tapered. This is the most dramatic nail shape. The sides are angled to come to a very narrow and pointy tip. Because of the length and point of this dramatic shape, these nails may be more prone to breakage. This style definitely isn’t ideal for people who frequently work with their hands. If you want to try out a stiletto nail shape but don’t think the length would work with your lifestyle, then try out the almond shape. They’re very similar in appearance, except almond nails look less dramatic and softer.

Stiletto nails are very frequently seen on the runway or in the media. Many of your favorite celebrities have also probably rocked this style on the red carpet and at award shows.

8. Coffin

Often referred to as ballerina nails, coffin nails mimic the shape of a coffin or ballerina slipper. They are similar to a stiletto shape with tapered sides, but with a flat square tip instead of a point. The tapered sides tend to create an illusion that elongates your fingers, but like with the square style, the flat tip creates an endpoint.

This style is typically best with long nails to allow the shape to really show. Unlike some of the other shapes, I definitely would not recommend this style if you prefer shorter nails. If you tried a short version, it would be difficult to see the distinct features that define the coffin shape.
