Not everyone has the time, patience, or money to justify going to the nail salon every couple of weeks. It can be a fun activity for special occasions, but let’s face it, it is not the most practical weekly, biweekly, or even monthly expense for a lot of us. I simply do not have the patience or desire to sit still in a public place with someone touching me for more than five minutes, hence why I have been doing my own nails for most of my life.
Painting your own nails can be one of the best creative outlets, even if you have no artistic talent. Your nails do not have to be perfect, they just have to make you feel happy and confident. It is an excellent selfcare activity, especially for those of us who spend all day running around and doing things for other people. What I love about painting my own nails is that it is time that I can dedicate to myself. I can just grab a fun beverage, put on a show, movie or podcast and spend time unwinding.

DISCLAIMER: Please keep in mind, I am not a licensed nail technician. These are just the steps I follow when I am looking to pamper myself and do a full manicure. You are more than welcome to do your own research and try different techniques.
Step 1: Start with a clean base
Any good manicure starts with a clean base. Remove any remaining nail polish from your previous manicure using 100% acetone and disinfect your hands.
Step 2: Nail prep
Now that your nails are clean, it is time to prep your nails (NOTE: I typically like to let my nails dry and breathe for at least 20 minutes after removing my last manicure BEFORE I do any prep). Cut and file your nails to the desired length and shape. If necessary, also push back your cuticles. It is easiest to push back your cuticles when they have been softened. To do this, you can simply soak your nails for a few minutes in warm water (or do it right after showering).
After soaking your nails, it is important to make sure your nails are completely dry and have returned to their original shape before applying any polish as they naturally expand when exposed to water. If you paint your nails while they are in this expanded state, your manicure will be more easily prone to cracking and chipping.
Step 3: Apply base coat
Before applying any colored lacquer, always apply a base coat. Using a base coat gives the lacquer something to securely adhere to on your nails which adds to the longevity of your manicure. A base coat also helps to protect your nails from any potential staining from colored polishes.
Step 4: Apply color
Once the base coat is completely dry, it is time to start applying your colored polish of choice. Start at the base of your nail bed, just before your cuticles. Apply thin and even strokes. Be careful to not flood your cuticles with the polish.
Most polishes will only need/require 1-2 coats of color. If the color is sheer, you can apply a third coat for a more opaque look. Let each layer dry completely before applying any additional coats of polish.
Step 5: Apply top coat
Once your nails are painted and the desired color saturation is achieved, finish everything off with a top coat. Using a top coat gives the lacquer a beautiful glossy shine while also helping to prevent the color from chipping which adds to the longevity of your manicure.
Step 6: Clean edges
If you are anything like me, then you can be a little messy when painting your own nails (especially when using your non-dominant hand). That is totally okay, you are not expected to be perfect. Simply take some nail polish remover on a brush or cotton swab, and gently and carefully remove any excess polish from around your nails and cuticles.
Like with any new and unfamiliar hobby, there may be challenges and frustration in the beginning. However, it is important to remember that it is okay and it is a learning process. Spend time finding what works best for you. A great aspect of nail polish is that you can always remove it and start over. With time, I have full confidence that you will be a nail painting pro!
